Saying "I Love You" to Friends

Two of the most wonderful people I've ever met, friendship courtesy of Bates Dance Festival
Saying "I love you" is a big deal.  People fret over the perfect moment and worry about how it will go over with the other.  Or at least that's how it is in the movies.  Dropping the "L" word is a major milestone in any romantic relationship.  But what about friendships?

I'm the type of person who cares deeply about the people I meet, especially in non-romantic settings.  In fact, I would say that meeting and connecting with people is what makes me happiest in the world.  My friends are like my family, and a good conversation can leave me smiling for hours.  The forging of new relationships leaves me more satisfied than any home-cooked meal.

I recently decided to start actively letting my friends know how much they matter to me by telling them I love them.  It sounds odd in writing, but it's such a fulfilling practice!  After becoming single again, I found I had a love void in my life.  I was accustomed to ending our nightly phone calls with an "I love you," and now suddenly that was gone.  But there was no reason why this void couldn't easily and immediately be filled.  So I started ending my (not frequent enough) phone calls to Marina with a very heartfelt "love you, girl." And now before we go to sleep, Cindy and I will exchanges a "buenas noches, love you!"

Because, no matter what I decide to do with dating, and what comes out of that decision, my friends will always be what gives my life meaning.

Meet The Author

I'm Madysen, born and raised in Nebraska but now living out my dreams in New York City. I moved here to go to Columbia, but living in New York has become so much more to me. This blog is a space where I can share my experiences of reconciling my midwestern upbringing with the life I live in the city. But even bigger than that, this blog serves as a space where I can try to understand where I fit into the larger social world, where I want to go in life, and how I want to go about pursuing all of these endeavors.
