Working That 9-5...

Drinking fountain I found during my unexpected trip to the New York Public Library
...is really draining.

As a child, I never understood why my dad would come home after work and need some down time.  Even last summer when I worked retail, I learned that those nine hours shifts on your feet without food or water or a break are the absolute worst.  But I figured that if/when I worked a job that I loved, it would be invigorating and exciting.

Nope.

It's still exhausting, and the hour commute each way doesn't help matters.

That being said, I don't want my summer routine to be work, TV, sleep, repeat.  I made the decision to live here for the summer for more reasons than work alone.  I'm can't waste this opportunity.

Oh, and my apartment doesn't have air conditioning.

So even with my exhausting 9-5 job(rather 10-6 but I'm referring to the idiom not the actual hours) I plan on getting out and making the most of my time.  I'm going to do my best to run.  I'm learning the very basics of coding (and loving it), I've already read three books (and abandoned 2 mid-way through because there are too many good books out there to suffer through a mediocre one), and I'm writing and blogging.  I'm walking around, finding new neighborhoods, familiarizing myself with the East Side of Manhattan.  I'm doing something with my time, despite the urges to waste my hours on Buzzfeed.

But no matter how tired I am after a long day of work, I'm going to make the most of this summer; this amazing opportunity that I've been afforded and won't take for granted.

Plus having an air conditioning is pretty good incentive to get out of my apartment.

Meet The Author

I'm Madysen, born and raised in Nebraska but now living out my dreams in New York City. I moved here to go to Columbia, but living in New York has become so much more to me. This blog is a space where I can share my experiences of reconciling my midwestern upbringing with the life I live in the city. But even bigger than that, this blog serves as a space where I can try to understand where I fit into the larger social world, where I want to go in life, and how I want to go about pursuing all of these endeavors.
